Virtual Tennis 3 Unlock Duke and King

Author: Zhi Wei

For Virtual Tennis 3, We shall first find out how to unlock the 2 secret characters in the game - Duke, and King.
After that, I would share my tips and tricks on how to defeat them in order to unlock them

I would assume that you played this game a couple of times before, and tried out the world tour and tennis academy to learn a couple of tricks.I am not a very good player, and thus you do not have to be excellent to unlock them.

Training in the tennis academy a few times should provide you basic foundations, and after learning these tricks and guides, you should have no problem unlock them.
Players were unsure as to how to meet them in the final match of tournament mode. Most assume that whether you face Luke or King is random.
Actually, that is not the case.

Unlock Duke

To face Duke in Virtual Tennis 3, You are required to have a score, on average, of Grade C or better in tournament mode, and not lose a single game

So, my advice would be to put number of games to 1.
This allows you to face Duke or King faster.
However, once you lose a game, you have to restart all over from round 1 again.
For new players, you could set the difficulty to the easiest.
You would still face Luke or King if you meet the requirements.

Beating Duke

I managed to beat Duke after observing his style of play.

When you serve, always serve to the middle of the court.
(The circled area in the picture)
Use as much power as possible.

His return would be a cross-court shot.
Anticipate that and execute a top spin shot along the line!

When he serves, your return should be a cross court slice shot.
Anticipate a drop shot, approach the net for a top spin shot along the line.

But then again, since you only set the number of games to 1, he would not get to serve!

Unlock King

To face King in virtual tennis 3, you would have attain a grade D or lower on average in tournament, without losing a single game.
Isnt it ironic that you have to get a lousy grade to face a person named King -.-
To get low grade, just take your time to beat your opponent.

I usually drag my game to around 3 minutes just in case, to attain an E for all the matches.
You can just hit easy shots to your opponent for a few rallies, or take your time with serves by going for a drink, watching TV, reading a page of the newspaper, and then return to the game.

Beating King

First, I would like to highlight the Underhand Serve.
It is performed by pressing (Down + Slice and Top Spin together)
You can adjust the height and angle of the serve by holding down and left/right longer.
Try this in the first few rounds.

When serving against King, use the underhand serve.
Make it as low and angled as possible to make it hard for him.
King would return with a shot along the line.
Anticipate this and deliver a cross court top spin.
Usually, this would make him dive for the ball.
You can now hit a strong shot to the empty side for the point.

For King's serve, you make a return with a cross court slice shot.
Anticipate a shot along the line from him, and return with another cross court slice shot.
Just continue with this return and he should be beaten.

Of course, he won't get to serve when you set it to 1 game.
Tricks on dealing with their service would be applicable to those who face them in world tour mode.
As their level increases, their style would become more unpredictable.
These tricks would work for the lower levels, for unlocking purposes.

I would like to share that I took a couple of tries to note their style, and after that, I only managed to defeat them on my second try.
So if you failed the first time, try again.
Once you study their play, it would be easier the next time round.
Adjusting the settings to Easiest difficulty, 1 game per set should make it fast for you to unlock both of them.
